Three squares – a commentary on the history of a place. Saxon Square in Warsaw.

The conducted studies concern historical and contemporary analyses of the development of three squares. The studies presented in this paper are related to Saxon Square located in Warsaw. The analyses comprised a large number of historical sources which evidence the development of space on the square. The studies also involved projects relating to elements of the development of the square. Part of the analyses also involve numerous competitions for the development of Saxon Square.

Prowadzone badania dotyczą analiz historycznych i współczesnych zagospodarowania trzech placów. Przedstawione w tym artykule badania dotyczą placu Saskiego znajdującego się w Warszawie. Analizy obejmowały liczne źródła historyczne, które pokazują rozwój przestrzeni placu. Badania objęły również projekty dotyczące elementów zagospodarowania placu. Część analiz obejmuje liczne konkursy, które obejmowały zagospodarowanie placu Saskiego.

Innovative renovation of the Church of the Revival of New Martyrs in Goretowo.

The article describes the unique experience of the reconstruction of the Trinity Church (with the New Martyrs side-altar) in the Goretovo village, based in Mozhaisk area (nearby of the Moscow region). The author demonstrates a non-standard, innovative approach of the abandoned Church revitalization, which manifested in the method of the lost volume reconstruction and the new system organization of painting and decorating. The experience of the reconstruction of the Goretovo. Church is useful in terms of understanding the complex relationship of creative freedom, the canonical framework and conservation standards.

Between analysis and synthesis – the diagram, definitions and representations.

In creative design practice, when we want to exert influence over reality, we operate using our architectural language, enriched with various forms of notation. Irrespective of whether this influence is to lead to exploring material reality or to transform it, our language is a type of barrier that limits our understanding and comprehension, thus being a certain type of bind that constrains new efforts. Aware of language limitations, the author places notions that appear in the article under closer scrutiny, with the key one being the notion of the diagram and diagrammatic representation. There are many terms used here, some of them having closely related meanings. It is therefore important to define them. In some cases, the author discusses various ways in which certain terms are understood or controversies associated with specific interpretations.

Pomiędzy analizą a syntezą. Diagram, definicje i reprezentacje.

W praktyce twórczych działań projektowych, chcąc działać na rzeczywistość operujemy naszym językiem architektów, wzbogaconym różnymi formami zapisu. Niezależnie od tego, czy to oddziaływanie ma prowadzić do poznania rzeczywistości materialnej, czy też do jej przekształcania, język nasz jest rodzajem bariery, wpływającej na ograniczenie naszego rozumienia i pojmowania, a więc jest pewnego rodzaju więzią krępującą nowe działania. Zdając sobie sprawę z ograniczeń językowych autor poddaje bliższej analizie terminy, które pojawiają się w artykule, przy czym kluczowym jest określenie diagramu i reprezentacji diagramowej. Terminów tu używanych jest dużo, część z nich jest przy tym bliskoznaczna. Stąd ważne jest określenie ich znaczenia. W niektórych przypadkach autor rozważa różne możliwości rozumienia pewnych terminów, czy kontrowersje związane z konkretnymi interpretacjami.

Architecture of exhibitions – case studies of contemporary spaces for art and artist.

At present, not only works of art and curatorial activity, but also the exhibition space seems crucial in the process of exhibiting art. The message formulated by exhibitions is influenced by their architecture through the architectural forms applied and the organisation of the space, along with its transformations, in order to create the individual character of a given exhibition. The paper analyses permanent and temporary exhibitions devoted to recognized artists (Felix Nussbaum Haus; Wyspiański and Wyspiański.Unknown exhibitions; Escher x nendo. Between Two Worlds exhibition). The aim of the work is an attempt to describe contemporary trends in exhibition design, pointing to the history of the phenomenon.

Architektura wystaw – studia współczesnych przestrzeni dla sztuki i artysty.

Obecnie w procesie eksponowania dzieł sztuki ważne stają się nie tylko dzieła, działalność kuratorska, ale również przestrzeń wystaw. Na formułowany przekaz wystaw wpływa ich architektura poprzez zastosowane formy architektoniczne i organizację przestrzeni wraz z jej transformacjami w celu stworzenia indywidualnego charakteru danej wystawy. Re-use of the 20th century aviation infrastructure.

This article explores issues related to the adaptation of former aviation infrastructure. For research purposes, several adaptations of former airports and airplane hangars are selected and presented. Those examples show the importance of this infrastructure in today's urbanized landscape, as well as in history, and thus the social and cultural values it brings. The benefits of the redevelopment of former airport sites are also presented.

Adaptacje XX-wiecznej infrastruktury lotniskowej.

W niniejszym artykule poruszone zostają kwestie związane z adaptacjami dawnej infrastruktury lotniskowej. W celach badawczych z grupy opuszczonych lotnisk wybrano i przeanalizowano kilka zaadaptowanych obiektów. Wyselekcjonowane przykłady pozwoliły na przedstawienie istotnej roli XX-wiecznej infrastruktury lotniskowej w dzisiejszym krajobrazie zurbanizowanym oraz jej wartości społeczne i kulturowe. Ukazano również zalety ponownego wykorzystania dawnych terenów lotniczych i znajdujących się tam obiektów.

Revitalization project of slum transformation: a case study Hay - Al Tanak, Beirut, Lebanon.

Slums are global phenomena that exists as a solution for those who couldn’t afford a house. This phenomenon is growing accompanying the rapid urbanization and the growth of the urban population, three-quarter of the world population anticipated to live in an urban environment by 2050 (Avis, 2016, p. 57). This paper reviews slum's evaluation of revitalization project for one of the poorest slums in Beirut called Hay-Al Tanak. Improving both physical and social environments with a long term design intervention aiming to create a new sustainable housing development and upgrading the existing structure. Enhancing the responsibility for urgent action to support the present and secure the future generation.

Concepts of "Biophilia" and "Livability" in the context of social perception of public space in cities.

The work concerns the concept of biophilia and livability in the planning of public space and using that space by urban residents. The authors refer to theories discussing human-nature co-relations and sustainable planning. Nature-based solutions and multisensory of space issues are also presented, and examples of pro-ecological programs and solutions in cities are given. The work is the result of initial research undertaken by scientists from Poland, Slovakia, and Serbia, and carried out as part of larger research in the COST Action CA13177 Circular City - Implementing nature-based solutions for creating a resourceful circular city.

The comparison of urban policy documents in the context of adaptation to climate change – case study of Wrocław.

Urban policy has a crucial role in mitigating climate change. The aim of this elaboration is to systematize the knowledge in this area, based on the critical analysis of spatial and sectoral documents of Wrocław. The level of correlation of these documents was verified based on the references to main risks connected with climate change identified in the city.As a result, the references to the adaptation actions that are connected with realisation of integrated spatial policy in the field of adaptation to climate change in urbanised areas were made. In conclusion, the substance of integrated urban planning as the most effective adaptation tool, was underlined.

Porównanie dokumentów polityki miejskiej w kontekście adaptacji do zmian klimatu na przykładzie Wrocławia.

Polityka miejska odgrywa szczególną rolę w łagodzeniu zmian klimatu. Celem niniejszego opracowania jest usystematyzowanie wiedzy z zakresu adaptacji do zmian klimatu na podstawie krytycznej analizy dokumentów planistycznych i sektorowych Wrocławia, weryfikując stopień ich korelacji w odniesieniu do głównych zagrożeń zidentyfikowanych na obszarze miasta. W rezultacie odniesiono się do działań adaptacyjnych, na podstawie których możliwa jest realizacji spójnej polityki przestrzennej odpowiadającej na zmiany klimatu na obszarach zurbanizowanych. We wnioskach wskazano istotę planowania zintegrowanego jako najefektywniejszego w obliczu omawianych zagrożeń.

Houses on the water – opportunities, possibilities, threats, legal problems.

The article deals with the problems of houses on the water and housing construction located in water, floodplains, wetlands, climate change, etc.. The theoretical and analytical part of the article was described on the example of the city of Szczecin and the conditions occurring there. The undertaken analyzes were compared with the applicable provisions of the Polish Building Law and Water Law, as well as necessary to obtain official decisions for this type of investment.

W artykule podejmuje się problematykę domów na wodzie oraz budownictwa mieszkaniowego zlokalizowanego na terenach wodnych, zalewowych, podmokłych itp. Teoretyczno-analityczna część artykułu opisana została na przykładzie miejscowości Szczecin i występujących tam uwarunkowań. Podjęte analizy zestawiono z obowiązującymi przepisami polskiego Prawa Budowlanego oraz Prawa Wodnego, a także koniecznymi do uzyskania decyzjami urzędowymi dla tego typu inwestycji.

Selected problems of housing complexes from the turn of the 20th and 21st century, including functional and spatial uniformity.

Unlike previous years, the changes that took place in housing complexes at the beginning of the 21st century include functional and spatial unification and an excessive increase in road traffic. Another problem is the lack of publicly available recreational areas and access to services in the immediate vicinity. After analyzing many housing complexes, those on the outskirts and suburban area were selected for research.

Wybrane problemy zespołów mieszkaniowych z przełomu XX i XXI wieku, w tym uniformizacja funkcjonalno-przestrzenna.

Compostion of football stadiums and their surroundings.

Football stadiums are among the most recognisable buildings within cities. Contemporary urban planning concepts do not diminish their historical significance and purpose, yet proposals of placing stadiums within city commercial districts grant them the status of service and entertainment complexes. In a process of evolution, they have been given the rank of central points of new commercial districts. What distinguishes their contemporary architecture? What factors affect their vision and the shaping of their surroundings? The author makes an attempt at answering these questions while referring to a broader spectrum of the design of the spatial structure and urban composition of cities and the concept of sustainable development. He characterises phenomena and selected components of stadium-related infrastructure elements and their function depending on a range of identified variable factors.

Kompozycja stadionów piłkarskich i ich otoczenia.

Stadiony piłkarskie należą do najbardziej rozpoznawalnych obiektów w miastach. Współczesne koncepcje urbanistyczne nie umniejszają ich historycznej rangi i przeznaczenia ale idee sytuowania stadionów w obrębie dzielnic komercyjnych miast nadają im status kompleksów widowiskowousługowych. W procesie ewolucji otrzymały one miano centralnych punktów nowych dzielnic komercyjnych. Co wyróżnia ich współczesną architekturę oraz jakie czynniki mają wpływ na ich wizję i kształtowanie ich otoczenia? Autor próbuje odpowiedzieć na te pytania w odniesieniu do szerszego spektrum kształtowania struktury przestrzennej – kompozycji urbanistycznej miast oraz koncepcji zrównoważonego rozwoju. Charakteryzuje zjawiska i wybrane komponenty infrastruktury okołostadionowej oraz jej funkcje w zależności od identyfikowanych, zmiennych czynników.

The problem of the artefacts in the public space based on the work remaining after the exhibitions construction in process.

The article presents the problem of the heritage of "modernist culture", which is undoubtedly part of the city's identity but from the point of view of many citizens is not treated in this way. The existence of contemporary works of art in public space is analyzed on the base of the works preserved in Łódź, remaining after the Construction in the Process exhibitions. It is often problematic, therefore their protection requires more than preserving only their material existence. They require verbal or multimedia commentary that will make people aware of their significance for the heritage of the intangible culture of a city, region or country.

Problem Artefaktów w przestrzeni publicznej na podstawie prac pozostałych po wystawach konstrukcja w procesie.

Artykuł przedstawia problem dziedzictwa „kultury modernistycznej”, które jest niewątpliwie częścią tożsamości miasta, ale z punktu widzenia wielu obywateli nie jest w ten sposób traktowane. Na podstawie dzieł zachowanych w Łodzi pozostałych po wystawach Konstrukcja w Procesie poddano analizie istnienie współczesnych dzieł sztuki w przestrzeni publicznej. Ma ono często problematyczny charakter, dlatego ich ochrona wymaga czegoś więcej niż zachowania materialnego istnienia. Wymagają one komentarza słownego bądź multimedialnego, który uświadomi mieszkańcom ich znaczenie dla dziedzictwa niematerialnej kultury miasta, regionu czy kraju.

Cultural landscape transformations in the suburban zone – case study of the Michałowice Commune.

The development of Warsaw determined the spatial system of its suburban zone. The original cultural landscape of the area, composed of agricultural areas with enclaves of forests and settlement clusters, is subject to continuous changes which intensified after the political transformation in 1989. Consecutive stages of such changes can be traced through the analysis of the Michałowice commune neighbouring to Warsaw. From the mid 19th century, suburban residential districts were built there, followed by model residential districts called “garden cities” (Komorów and Michałowi ce). The area of the commune is subject to strong urbanisation pressure. This contributes to changes in its cultural landscape and quality of residency in the area.

Przekształcenia krajobrazu kulturowego w strefie podmiejskiej na przykładzie Gminy Michałowice.

Rozwój Warszawy zdeterminował układ przestrzenny jej strefy podmiejskiej. Dawny krajobraz kulturowy tego obszaru, składający się z terenów rolniczych, z enklawami lasów i skupisk osadniczych, ulega obecnie przemianom, które nasiliły się po transformacji ustrojowej w 1989 r. Kolejne etapy tych przemian możemy prześledzić analizując rozwój, graniczącej z Warszawą, gminy Michałowice. Od połowy XIX wieku, powstawały tu tzw. letniska, a następnie, dwa wzorcowe osiedla -"miasta - ogrody" (Komorów i Michałowice). Obszar gminy podlega silnej presji urbanizacyjnej, co wpływa na zmiany jej krajobrazu kulturowego i jakość zamieszkania na tym terenie.

The reconstruction of monuments after world war ii and the modern tendencies in the process of their revalorization presented using the example of the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle and the st. James Archcathedral.

The article presents the process of historical reconstruction and modern revalorization of two most important Szczecin monuments: the Pomeranian Dukes' Castle and the Cathedral of St. James the Apostle. In this context, an evolution of views regarding the form in which they will be passed on to future generations is shown.

Planning of Volodymyr Pokrovsky’s Non-Ecclesiastical Buildings: Kharkiv’s Urban History of the 1910s.

Kharkiv’s urban development experienced an unprecedented leap at the turn of the 20th century. It was driven mostly by economic growth, social change, and cultural shifts. The master plan of 1895 for Kharkiv inevitably influenced the shaping of new urban planning and spatial compositions. This research investigates the planning structures of the most remarkable non-ecclesiastical buildings designed by the prominent architect and artist Volodymyr Pokrovsky (1863–1924) in Kharkiv during the 1910s. The authors specifically explore their notable features in the context of Kharkiv’s urban development.
